A fire has broken out at the famous Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, the France capital on Monday evening.
The cause of the inferno was not immediately clear, but officials say that it could be linked to renovation work taking place on the building.
According to the Mayor of the city, Anne Hidalgo: “A terrible fire is under way at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris,”
According to reports, the fire started around 6:50pm local time.
The cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century and is famous for featuring in Victor Hugo’s classic novel the Hunchback of Notre Dame, attracts millions of tourists every year.
It was in the middle of renovations, with some sections under scaffolding, while bronze statues were removed last week for works.
