A female Doctor has bitten off the tongue of her would-be rapist when he attacked her as she slept in her hospital’s staff quarters.
The 24-year-old fought back when the man, who had gained access to the South African hospital posing as a patient, tried to force his tongue into her mouth.
The bite was so severe that it detached part of the attacker’s tongue, police said.
He then fled the room leaving a trail of blood behind him.
Police put out an alert to all nearby hospitals to look out for a man seeking urgent treatment for mouth wound.
Shortly afterwards medics at a nearby hospital reported that a man had come in with wounds to his tongue.
The 32-year-old was arrested before being driven back to the hospital where the attack took place so he could be identified by the victim.
He was then taken to another hospital to undergo specialist surgery, and will appear before magistrates when he is well enough to leave hospital.
A spokesperson for the Free State provincial health department said: “During the scuffle the doctor managed to bite off the tongue of the alleged perpetrator who ran off.
“He was later arrested and then taken for plastic surgery and was operated on under police guard and he we will be handed over to be taken befor a court in due course.
“It is by the grace of God that the doctor had the strength to fight back and bite the suspects tongue off. She is currently undergoing medical tests and counselling.”
