The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has asked the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently overhaul the security apparatus of the country with a view to halting the spate of killings and other crimes going on across the country.
The SDP in a statement by its Advocacy Group quoted the National Chairman of the party, Professor Tunde Adeniran, as describing the brutal murder of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Ondo state last Friday by suspected herdsmen as one-death-too-many, repugnant and unacceptable to the people of Nigeria.
He called on the Federal Government to intensify action to ensure that the perpetrators of the dastardly act are brought to justice without delay, while reiterating the urgent need for President Buhari and the security agencies to deploy more resources to combating the menace of all perpetrators of violence tormenting Nigerians.
Also, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party, Dr. Olu Agunloye, said since the current security set up in the country does not seem to be effective in combating its challenges, the time has come for the federal government to restructure the security apparatus in order to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians.
Agunloye, a former Minister of Defence, who also condemned the gruesome murder of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin and the increase in cases of kidnappings across the country, especially in the south west, added that only a decisive action by the federal government would restore confidence of Nigerians in the nation’s security system.
Furthermore, a National Leader of SDP and a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Adefisoye, has also faulted the current strategies being employed by security agencies to combat crimes and criminalities in the country, stressing the need to bring in new ideas and technology for effective security.
Adefisoye, popularly known as Young Alhaji, who represents Idanre/Ifedore Federal constituency on the platform of the SDP, stated this after paying a condolence visit to the residence of Pa Rueben Fasoranti in Akure in company of the State Chairman of the party.
The Federal lawmaker promised to work with his colleagues on finding lasting solution by working on legislations that will promote the use of modern technology to combat the security challenges facing the country.
